NCC Media Productions is a technology training and entrepreneurial development program for girls who have completed the Girls Connected TechCamp program. NCC Media Productions concentrates its activities on the following areas:
Advanced Technical Skills
The technical training focuses on advanced web design using DreamWeaver, HTML programming, JavaScript, Photoshop, Flash, and Cascading Style Sheets. In the training, participants benefit from the expertise and experience of a wide range of Triangle Area professionals. Volunteers from GlaxoSmithKline, Prodigal One Media, Wake Medical Center, McDonald’s Corporation, and Drayton Consulting have shared their talents with program participants.
Computer Training Skills
Girls in the NCC Media Productionsprogram are given the opportunity to student teach all Girls Connected TechCamp classes as well as to deliver training to students at computer camps throughout the area.
In Summer 2006, NCC students participated in and taught Web Design classes at the Boys & Girls Club Technology Camp held at NC State University.
In Summer 2007 our girls were instrumental in delivering web design training at IBM’s EXITE camp in Research Triangle Park. The girls attended the planning meetings and helped train the IBM volunteers. During the actual camp, Jamillah (age 15) lead a web design class of 16 students. She was ably assisted by Katie (age 15).
Employment Experience
Participants in the NCC Media Productions program work with local businesses and non-profit organizations to help them create a web presence. Girls work in teams of 2 to 4 to handle all aspects of managing a web design project.
Each team of girls is responsible for scheduling client meetings, outlining client specifications, desigining, creating and launching the site, and handling ongoing maintenance issues.
The girls are evaluated by their teachers, critiqued by their clients, and must keep abreast of new developments in the field that might impact their projects.
The girls leave the NCC Media Productions program having developed their leadership, presentation, communication, and technical skills in a real-world environment. They also have the ability to transfer these skills to their team members, to their community organizations, and to future participants in NC Connected’s programs.
