After traveling to SC and meeting with center director, Ruthabell Nance and center volunteers, Denise Tawwab, who has a special mission to help kids in rural and at-risk areas, was delighted to support the work that is being done to help the students in Lake View succeed in school.

October 17, 2009 – NC Connected joined a team of nearly 20 business and non-profit leaders to walk under one banner; to honor those who are battling or who have battled cancer. Participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual Light-the-Night Walk for Leukemia and Lymphoma research, this leadership team and NC Connected students have found a way to use their resources in a grassroots kind of way.

Light-the-Night is an annual walk held each fall in communities throughout the United States and Canada to raise money for blood cancer research and patient services. Teams of co-workers, families and friends walk together in twilight holding illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters, and a single gold balloon that represents a loved one lost to cancer. The walk, which honors and commemorates lives touched by blood cancer, is a community celebration, with music, refreshments and family activities.

Denise Tawwab, NC Connected CEO explains her groups participation in the walk by saying, “This is another opportunity for us to show the kids at NC Connected how they can be a part of the solution to the challenges in this world. By walking here tonight to help raise awareness, they come to understand that a small amount of effort can make a real difference.”
